Kosovo small group holiday
You will start our trip in Pristina with our staff, with its melange of Christianity and Islam, exploring the pristine mountainous countryside, the spiritual heritage of the dervishes in Gjakova. In Rahovec we sample some of the region’s excellent wines, and then head to the historic town of Prizren, dominated by an ancient fortress and home to numerous fascinating mosques, churches and merchants’ houses. Finally we head into the Sharri Mountains, one of the most traditional areas in Kosovo to understand the rich cultural diversity of the country.
Day I
Arrive in Pristina and transfer to the hotel. The rest of the day is free to relax or explore. Overnight in Hotel
Day II
Today we will explore the city and visiting some of its key sites, including the 15th century Carshi Mosque and the Orthodox church. Later we head to the ruins of Ulpiana, a Roman city from the 2nd century founded under the rule of the Emperor Trajan, then visit the spectacular Gadime Cave with its multi-coloured stalactites and stalagmites. Day III
Head to Peja, at the foot of the gigantic Damned Mountains (Bjeshk’t e Nemuna), on the river Bistrica and the entrance of the Rugova Gorge. Peja was an important regional centre and the seat of the Patriarchate of Peja – here we spend time exploring the town and delve into its Ottoman heritage, visiting the Haxhi Beut and Bajrakli Mosques as well as the Sheremet Tower, a typical Albanian stone house often used to hide people during blood feuds. Day IV
Continue to the village of Boge, situated in one of the most beautiful valleys in the region. We spend today exploring the mountainous countryside. This area is home to stunning scenery and some of the country’s more traditional villages, which we stop to visit where possible. Our journey takes us through a beautiful landscape of jagged peaks, lush forests and rivers and shows the natural beauty of this charming land. Overnight local guesthouse. (BD)
Day V
Head to Gjakova, stopping first to visit the Decani Monastery. Built in the 14th century by the Serbian king Stephan, it was protected during the days of the Turkish occupation and its impressive frescoes are a highlight of a visit to Kosovo. From here we move on to the traditional village of Junik with it’s traditional Albanian stone houses or kulla for an insight into the feudal traditions of the region. Finally we arrive in Gjakova with its clock tower, old bazaar an d beautiful Hadum Mosque dating to the 16th century. Overnight in Hotel.
Day VI
Drive to Rahovec with our Pullman where we visit a local winery and taste some of the local produce. We then continue to the ancient city of Prizren, dating back to the days of the Illyrians and one of Kosovo’s most historic towns. Spend time exploring its old fortress, churches and mosques; Overnight in Hotel.
Day VII
We head into the nearby Sharri Mountains, which border Macedonia. With glacial lakes and pine forests the mountains are home to lynx, bear and chamois, as well as traditional villages where some people still wear traditional dress. We head to the village of Brod, with its lovely Ottoman buildings and stone houses; Overnight in Hotel. (BD)
Day VIII
Return to Pristina and transfer to the airport for your onward flight. (B)
